Exact age vs. simple year subtraction
Subtracting birth year from the current year only gives a rough figure. Someone born in December 2000 is not 25 years old in January 2025 — they turn 25 in December. Exact age counts the full years, then the remaining months, then the remaining days.
The manual method, step by step
- Years: subtract the birth year from the current year. If your birthday has not happened yet this year, subtract 1.
- Months: count the months from your last birthday to the current month.
- Days: count the days from your last month-anniversary to today.
Worked example
Born 15 March 1998 — today is 14 September 2026
Step 1 — years: 2026 − 1998 = 28. Has 15 March happened in 2026? Yes → 28 years.
Step 2 — months: from 15 March 2026 to 15 September 2026 = 6 months.
Step 3 — days: from 15 September to 14 September = 29 days (September has 30 days) → 29 days (the 15th would complete the month).
Result: 28 years, 6 months, 29 days — one day short of 28½ years.
Do leap years matter?
For calendar age, no — a year always runs from one birthday to the next. Leap years only matter when you count total days: a February 29 birthday adds one extra day every four years, and the day counts of February (28 vs 29) change month-to-day totals.

A person born on 29 February 2000 has had 9,131 days of life by 28 February 2025, and 9,132 days by 1 March 2025 — but which date counts as their 25th birthday?
